The Circle Book #2 Launches at Bluezone
Collaboration and circularity are the next frontiers in textile and fashion transformation. By working together, sharing ideas and visions, the lookbook and work tool called THE CIRCLE BOOK was first created in 2020 from the ACT TOGETHER partnership between Tencel, Meidea and Officina+39. Meant to inspire new generations of mindful designers, this book demonstrates how it’s possible to create designs and projects related to responsible circular fashion. Download the first edition of the Circle Book here.
Now get ready for the next round of inspiration and invaluable insights with the second edition of the Circle Book, launching soon at BLUEZONE, 31 August – 1 September 2021.
“This year we’ve expanded the project and we are ready to launch the second edition in collaboration with many engaged partners, a team with common goals focused on transparency and circularity in denim design.”
Eleonora De Martin, Meidea
Visitors at our shows can also look forward to the exclusive presentation of the new CULTURE.IN collection. This circular capsule collection was developed by the 10 contributors of the second edition of The Circle Book. An example in circular collaboration, these top players in the supply chain have merged their sustainable technologies to reduce waste production and create clothes which can be traced from fiber to finish.
Not only can brands can find a reliable and traceable supply chain, but it is also meant to act like an adaptable model for their collections and products. The collection of transparently made clothes from recycled and degradable materials will be presented at BLUEZONE, Hall 7, A 19. Register for your tickets to attend our show in person.
Collaboration and circularity is key to accelerating the potential of sustainability for the future of our industry. But just how did these 10 collaborators act together to divide the roles and responsibilities that made THE CIRCLE BOOK #2 and the CULTURE.IN collection a reality?
We begin with the Meidea team responsible for overseeing design and creative direction, working on the project as a whole to realise the physical production of the denim collection. Officina +39 are the chemical process experts working with their internally developed technology Recycrom to transforms textile waste into powder dyes.
The collection features a selection of fabrics made from hemp, organic cotton as well as from Refibra and Tencel provided by fiber specialist Lenzing. Starting from RTD or RAW bases, the collections’ unique compositions were created by denim fabric specialists Tejidos Royo and Calik Denim.
The collection also features labels and ribbons supplied by Ribbontex made from biodegradable materials from recycled plastic bottles, cottons and polyester as well as eco leathers, 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and hemp. Buttons and rivets were supplied by Spring 85 including steel buttons made in 100% re-used processing waste.
Finally, Dr Bock Industries were the garment specialists responsible for construction using yarns provided by Crafil. In the final stages, RGT laundry experts put the finishing touches on the garments featured in the CULTURE.IN capsule collection.
A truly impressive example in successful, circular collaboration. But what does the collection look like? Attend our next show to find out and experience the collection in person. Plus learn more about this project during our following events:

ReSOURCE: The Denim Edit
The denim industry is taking innovative steps towards denim manufacturing that is cleaner, more respectful to our environment and that uses fewer resources. While each mill, launderer and denim service provider who exhibits at BLUEZONE are champions of sustainability in their own right, there is a growing ethos in the denim community and at our shows to support one another and grow towards a cleaner industry together.
Together with ReSOURCE, our online sourcing platform for sustainable materials, we are able to evaluate denim according to different sustainable criteria across the fiber, dyeing and finishing stages of denim production. Understanding how the material is made, under which conditions, from which materials and the production methods will go a long way to deciding which sustainable denim is relevant to you and your brand. Get to know the leading 3 material criteria you need to know about when it comes to sourcing sustainable denim:
Lyocell Tencel®
Lyocell is a manufacturing process of rayon which is much more eco-friendly than its relatives modal and viscose. Lyocell is made in a closed-loop system that recycles almost all of the chemicals used. Tencel® is made from eucalyptus from PEFC certified forests. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly without the use of pesticides, fertilizers or irrigation.
Look for denim which contain Tencel if you are interested in:
- Low water usage
- Using renewable resources
- Chemical control
- GMO free
- No soil erosion
- Biodegradable
Eco Stretch
Fiber innovations such as Creora, Eco Lycra and Roica EcoSmart Elastane provide a biodegradable alternative, however stretch denim is synonymous with synthetics and will typically contain a percentage of either polyester, nylon or elastane. Until recently it was not possible for a stretch denim to be 100% biodegradable but soon Canidani, will launch their latest Bio-Stretch fabric Covera™ at BLUEZONE on August 31st 2021.
Look for eco stretch denim if you are interested in:
- Reducing the time for the product to degrade
- Reduce the amount of synthetic fibers used in production
- Blending fibers to produce new qualities
Recycled Fibers
A lot of research is underway to making denim using post-consumer and post-production waste. Often, recycled fibers make up only a percentage of the overall composition of the final denim product. Typically the most popular recycled materials used in denim production include: cotton; polyester; post-consumer denim; post-consumer fibers; PET and nylon.
Look for denim which contains recycled fibers if you are interested in:
- Using waste materials
- Diverting waste from landfills
- Reducing waste
- Low water usage
- Low energy usage
- Blending fibers to produce new qualities

ReSOURCE: Sustainable Leather & Alternatives
Whatever has led you here, you are already thinking about the reasons a brand has for choosing between the seemingly massive range of leathers and leather alternatives available. This decision usually begins with a basic understanding of the manufacturing processes in order to decide, does the final material reflect brand values, share brand beliefs and share the same innovative approach? To help choose the best option for you, we provide material highlights from our recent showcase on ReSOURCE to directly connect you with industry partners who can support in your next steps.
There are over 50 kinds of sustainable textile and material certifications used across our materials showcased online and at our shows with ReSOURCE. Get to know which 4 you should be familiar with when it comes to sourcing sustainable leathers and leather alternative materials:
Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex
Specifically tailored to leather articles which have been tested for harmful substances. Certification can be awarded for leather semi-finished products, finished leather, leather fibre materials up to finished articles and accessories.
Look for Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex certified materials if you are interested in:
- using real leather materials
- materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
- ensuring your products are harmless to health
Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex
All types of textiles that have been tested for harmful substances, from yarns to the finished product, may bear the STANDARD 100 product label.
Look for Oeko-Tex 100 certified materials if you are interested in:
- certified materials with an innovative approach
- materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
- ensuring your products are harmless to health
V-Label by European Vegetarian Union (EVU)
The only requirement of this certificate is that the product is vegan/vegetarian, meaning the product must not contains products of animal origin; no animal auxiliaries may be used during the production process.
Look for V-Label certified materials:
- to ensure materials which are vegan, cruelty free and animal friendly
- to include in brand marketing, communication and raise brand awareness
- support the development of further innovative textile and accessories vegan alternatives
Cradle to Cradle by Cradle to Cradle (C2C)
Cradle to cradle (C2C) is an approach to a continuous and consistent recycling management. “Cradle-to-cradle products” are therefore those that can either be returned to biological cycles as biological nutrients or can be continuously kept in technical cycles as “technical nutrients”.
Look for Cradle to Cradle certified materials if you are interested in:
- ensuring production is focused on reducing water wastage and usage, fostering a closed loop system using wet processes
- materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
- materials which use reduced energy in the supply chain, with use of renewable energy with minimal reliance on petro-chemicals
- materials which reduce and recycle waste throughout the textile supply chain
Other sustainable certifications to get to know when sourcing sustainable leathers & alternatives include: IVN Naturleder, Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) + Global Recycled Stand (GRS)

ReSOURCE: The Recyled Edit
Conscious fashion can mean many different things, but for you as an ethical fashion brand it means starting at the very foundations to ensure your garments are part of the solution and not adding to the problems caused by fast fashion and over consumption.
While virgin fibres and organic naturals are certainly the first fabrics which come to mind, there is not one fabric which is inherently without fault. Therefore, when thinking of which fabrics to feature in your new collections, why not consider that recycled fabrics offer diverse and innovative solutions to one of the fashion industry’s biggest pollutant problems; reusing and repurposing materials which already exist.
With each new season, more innovative materials and processes are launched with ReSOURCE. Directly supporting the growth of textile recycling as a way to ensure more materials are diverted from landfills.Let’s take a look at the diverse performance, functions and blends of recycled fabrics which are showcased on our sustainable sourcing platform, ReSOURCE.
