CO2 Tex - Sustainable innovations
Within the BIOTEXFUTURE cluster, the CO2Tex project introduces innovative paths for sustainable elastic yarns. In the context of the overarching BIOTEXTFUTURE project, the Institute for Textile Technology (ITA) and the Chair for Technology and Organizational Sociology (STO) at RWTH Aachen, together with adidas, strive to achieve the transition of the entire textile value chain to bio-based materials.
CO2Tex stands out as a central project within BIOTEXFUTURE, focusing on CO2-containing thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as an alternative to conventional elastane. This project revolutionizes elastic yarn production by eliminating toxic solvents, not only reducing environmental impact but also enabling potential industrial mass production.
The overarching BIOTEXFUTURE project, led by ITA, STO, and adidas, aims for a swift translation of fundamental research into practical applications. Traditional textiles are to be replaced by sustainable, biobased materials, with CO2Tex playing a pivotal role by demonstrating advancements in the development of commercially viable elastic filament yarns from CO2-containing TPU.
CO2Tex’s goal by October 2024 is to establish these environmentally friendly yarns on an industrial scale, replacing conventional elastane. The project not only focuses on technological advancements but positions itself as a pioneer for sustainable development across the textile industry. By integrating CO2Tex into BIOTEXFUTURE, the vision of an eco-friendly and bio-based future in the textile industry takes a significant step forward.

CLARITY In conversation with the organisers of MUNICH FABRIC START about the industry, the trade show calendar and new dates
New year, new beginnings – what’s new at MUNICH FABRIC START in 2024?
Sebastian Klinder: In 2024, MUNICH FABRIC START will continue to serve as a central European anchor point for the fashion industry, combining creativity and business. When it comes to scheduling and organising our events, we want to meet the needs of as many exhibitors and visitors as possible, while also taking into account differing rhythms of the industry. For this reason, we have decided to shorten the date in September 2024 to two days in line with the current market requirements – with streamlined schedules at familiar venues. With this scheduling, our shows remain the relevant sourcing platforms that can meet the permanently and rapidly changing needs of the fashion industry against a background of efficient time and budget management. MUNICH FABRIC START, BLUEZONE as an international trade show for denim, streetwear and sportswear, KEYHOUSE as an innovation hub and THE SOURCE, where products and services relating to the latest sourcing services and apparel manufacturing take centre stage, will therefore take place on 3 and 4 September.
Frank Junker: Of course, a lot will remain the same this year – in the best possible sense. We are looking forward to many long-standing exhibitors as well as new faces who will present their latest developments at MUNICH FABRIC START. With MUNICH FABRIC START, THE SOURCE, BLUEZONE and KEYHOUSE, we are creating a framework that reflects the industry as well as the latest trends and innovations in all their facets. And the line-up of our carefully curated seminar program includes numerous highlights that should not be missed.
» CLARITY is about the pursuit of structure and unambiguousness on both a large and small scale «
„Clarity“ is the title of the new summer season. What’s behind it?
Sebastian Klinder: “Clarity” describes the pursuit of structure and unambiguousness on both, a large and small scale. Both are increasingly rare in the context of the current realities of our lives, because today everything is relative or relocatable. In view of this increasingly diffuse situation, we are also intuitively searching for orientation – both, on a large and small scale. Fashion, design and aesthetics are no exception. Consumers also want clarity, for example with regard to production and supply chains. So, there is also a constantly growing requirement for information that needs to be satisfied.
Frank Junker: Balancing and harmonising opposites serve as a central source of inspiration, for example in reconciling traditional craftsmanship and new technologies that can make the industry more sustainable. By balancing the dichotomies that move the industry – new and old, rural and urban, functional and decorative, self and society – new ideas can emerge that creatively prepare for the challenges of today and the future.
The fashion industry and the corresponding trade show landscape – especially in Germany – are currently in a phase of upheaval. As the organiser of MUNICH FABRIC START, how do you see your role in this context?
Sebastian Klinder: As a platform for high-quality fabrics and materials, MUNICH FABRIC START plays a central role in the German fashion landscape. We want to create the ideal environment for business with a high-quality, comprehensive exhibitor portfolio and the right scheduling. Our aim is not to set trends, but to reflect the most relevant ones, thereby strengthening the entire value chain and driving the development of the industry. With our holistic ecosystem consisting of Fabrics, Additionals, Bluezone, Per4mance, ReSource, Design Studios, Keyhouse, Sustainable Innovations and The Source, we fulfil this aspiration at MUNICH FABRIC START. Through targeted coordination with the industry, we offer an ideal atmosphere in which future-oriented players can come together.
Frank Junker: MUNICH FABRIC START is a creative hub that gives designers space to bring their ideas to life. We see ourselves as trailblazers for creative and technological innovations and thus as a driving force for the further development of the fashion industry. In this context, the topic of sustainability, for example, is firmly anchored in the program of our events. In addition, we attach great importance to our range of trend forums and presentations in order to be able to offer our guests the most holistic, future-oriented program possible, which serves the need for orientation and inspiration in equal measure and, last but not least, brings the entire industry together for exchange, networking and get-togethers.

The clothing of the future - Sustainable Innovations
Every year, more than 120 million tons of textile fibers are processed worldwide – more than a third of them are petroleum-based synthetic fibers, i.e. resource- and emission-intensive, causing waste and polluting the environment. An alternative is needed. But: Where do the fibers for the clothes of the future come from – are textiles that grow on trees or shoes that come from the sea a pure utopia?
As part of the BIOTEXFUTURE Germany innovation space, leading research teams from the textile sector and industry are driving forward the development of bio-based textiles. Their aim is to accelerate the structural change towards a bioeconomy in this sector. On top of that, the ambition is also to find alternatives and solutions for some of the most important challenges currently facing the textile industry – from impregnation and dyes to elastane alternatives as well as textile recycling and microplastic filling in sports fields. On the research side, one of the world’s leading Institutes for Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University (ITA) is responsible together with the Chair of Technology and Organisational Sociology (STO). For the industry, this part is taken over by the global company adidas AG.
Bye bye, plastic! The long-term goal is to be able to replace virgin polyester as a raw material. In concrete terms, this means that BIOTEXFUTURE is working in ten different projects to convert the individual steps along the textile value chain from petroleum-based to bio-based in the future plus to make the basic research carried out for this purpose accessible to the broad masses as quickly as possible. From algae to artificial turf to fungi: the idea behind the project ALGAETEX, for example, is to use biopolymers obtained from algae for use in textiles. BioTurf is about the development of an artificial turf structure made of bio-polyethylene that is at least as efficient as the petroleum-based materials used so far while being recyclable and without microplastic filling at the same time; the Fungal Fibers project is about the production of bio-based textile fibers from a promising fungusbased production process for the sports and medical sectors.
“The textile industry is not yet sustainable and burdened with massive environmental problems. Natural raw materials and ew textile technologies are a great opportunity for the future to meet the numerous challenges of the textile industry. This concerns the replacement of petroleum for polyester roduction by biological materials such as algae or fungi as well as bio-based coatings, dyes or completely new manufacturing processes. However, the major challenges of the textile sector can only be solved in close cooperation between research and industry. This is why we are committed to the BIOTEXFUTURE innovation space and would like to attract numerous new supporters in the coming years.”
Nicole Espey, Project Manager BIOTEXFUTURE

Bluezone Highlights
AMD X Naveena
We are born with 5 senses. They accompany us for a lifetime. Let us feel, taste, hear our environment, smell and see what surrounds us. Within 5 Groups of mixed courses from students of Fashion Design (B.A.), Fashion & Design Management ( B.A.)and Fashion Journalism & Communication (B.A.) the students from the Dusseldorf based AMD Akademie für Mode & Design, faculty design of Hochschule Fresenius, analyzed the importance and impact of our senses in context of Denim.
Why Denim? Because this beautiful and rich material like no other embodies senses and sensuality the best. In times of digitalization and virtual universes, it is our fabric of choice that symbolizes it´s human connection the best.
Join us on the Blue Zone area in Hall 7 | A 01 and get in touch, hear, feel, smell and also taste what Denim Senses triggers in yourself!
The 5 DENIM SENSES are brought to live thanks to the generous support from Naveena Denim Mills who provided the denim fabrics for this project:
The BERRIT I95 fabric includes hemp and belongs to Naveena’s CANNA DENIM concept which is made of cottonized and mechanical hemp composition around 20%. It is durable, breathable, anti-bacterial, requires 70% less water comparing to cotton and no pesticides. Plus it growths 3-4 times faster than cotton. KEATON I73 combines hemp and Tencel together.
MORGAN B56 includes recycled linen and belongs to Naveena’s LINO+ concept: fabrics with smart linen fiber, created by post industrial waste. They are GRS certified, breathable and moisture wicking.
VIDIC I81: Includes BioHemp and is part of Naveena’s BIOTECH concept. The mill teamed up with Circular Systems in a unique collaboration that transforms agricultural crop left-overs into scalable, high-value natural fiber denim fashion products with their Agraloop™ technology. BIOTECH fabrics are made with natural fiber derived from CBD hemp crop residue and refined into textile-grade fiber called Agraloop™ BioFibre™. These fabrics are also compliant with the Global Recycled Standard and Organic Blend Content Standard.
OLITA B91 and GLENN B56 are part of their RETROTECH concept which is inspired by retro denim heritage and remixing it to modern day living. Retrotech provides wear comfort without sacrificing vintage authentic look. For more comfortable fits, Naveena blended high and lows with stretch resulting in a modern vintage cotton with a stretch blend.
TRANSFORMERS FOUNDATION
Initiated in September 2022, the TRANSFORMES FOUNDATION teamed up with BLUEZONE to join forces to educate and inspire the Denim industry. Trend Preview for AUTUMN.WINTER 24/25
MUNICH FABRIC START Autumn.Winter 24/25 s all about the seasonal leitmotif EACH OTHER. How can we look into the future without losing our minds? Between utter resignation and blind rage lies a hopeful, wise and unbiased perspective. Our future lies in the diversity of such calm, thoughtful and courageous approaches.
EACH OTHER emphasizes the importance of personal connection. We need to continuously stay in touch with each other, be there for one another and listen attentively – even in difficult times. What’s unique about fashion is that we can promote well-being through a variety of tactile and emotional fabrics and styles – not only in sales and use, but also in the field and in production.
Let’s consciously pursue a common and effective goal: to create something beautiful with fashion and make a contribution to our humanity – for EACH OTHER!
WHAT’S NEW?
A multi-purpose black in combination with a light beige and a new anise are the key colours for Autumn.Winter 24/25. Strange colour duos like yellow/ mango, pink/peach or turquoise/blue bring fresh accents to the colour palette. In contrasts, cold and warm tones play with each other, in dark and light nuances, sometimes loud, sometimes quiet and as neutral or bright colors.
Decorative qualities are a recipe against crisis. Protection wear from cozy, lightweight to heavy weight fabrics are key for winter: a firework of creative yarns in volume, lightness, functionality and fancy combinations. Checks come in all variations, be it loud, quiet, big or small. A touch of trash, tech, nostalgie and 80ies brings bling in all variations. Open weaves or knits bring a nuance of winter transparency.
Casual comfort as standard: functional pragmatic classic and timeless styles come as coats, bomber jackets, suits, casual sakkos or padded styles. We play with extremes in width and wrapping volume for morning coat styles, over-shirts, blazers and baggies. Expressive looks are created for night and day with shine through elements rounded off by retro looks from the sixties, seventies and eighties.
These 5 EACH OTHER trends of MUNICH FABRIC START as well as the 10 denim-, street- and sportswear trends for BLUEZONE under the leitmotif CONNEXXION can be found as a comprehensive trend analysis with detailed colour cards, inspiring materials, moods, prints and styles in our TREND BOOK and COLOUR CODE – available in the trend forums in foyer 2 and 4, the trade show office room B 009 and at the Bluezone check-in counter.

Visbatex - Performance by nature
Green revolution with bamboo
Visbatex shows its revolutionary high-performance fabrics made of bamboo viscose at Munich Fabric Start
Performance by nature – Visbatex is a pioneer in the production of high-quality textiles based on bamboo viscose and sets standards in the implementation of a holistic circular economy and European production standards. At the Munich Fabric Start from 18 to 20 July 2023, the Munich-based company will show how high-tech and sustainability go hand in hand. Visit Visbatex in Hall 2 at Stand B 13.
Fabrics made of bamboo are rightly considered an ecologically sound alternative to conventional textiles. The product properties of the fibre of the rapidly renewable natural raw material are too superior. Bamboo offers excellent wearing comfort. The fabric has an antibacterial and thus odour-inhibiting effect. Microscopically small holes in the fibre ensure breathability and rapid moisture transport. And as a natural UV barrier, bamboo filters up to 97.5% of harmful UV radiation.
The young company Visbatex combines all these properties in its new revolutionary high-performance fabrics based on at least 50 % bamboo viscose. This world innovation is developed and refined in the company’s own Nature Tech Lab. Visbatex’s own laboratory is the heart of the company’s product development, with which Visbatex is driving forward the transformation of conventional textiles into high-tech materials with a great pioneering spirit. The goal of Visbatex’s textile revolution is a bionically inspired evolution of classic fabrics. Visbatex has already applied for a patent for the composition of its fabrics based on bamboo viscose. The bamboo viscose from Visbatex is sold as a blend with other textiles such as recycled polyester or organic cotton.
But it is not only the product properties of Visbatex textiles that are convincing. The production in Europe and the implementation of a holistic circular economy also set standards. “As a company, we want to live up to our social and ecological responsibility,” says Klaudia Atelj, Managing Director of Visbatex. “Visbatex is environmentally friendly, durable, very hard-wearing and dimensionally stable.“
A variety of uses derive from all these properties. Besides fashion, these include workwear, medical clothing, leisurewear and, of course, baby and children’s fashion. But even in the automotive sector or in Munich, 30 June 2023 the packaging industry, Visbatex textile fabrics can show off their outstanding quality and performance features.
About Visbatex
Visbatex strives for nothing more and nothing less than a textile revolution. In its own Nature Tech Lab, the Munich-based company develops high-performance fabrics based on bamboo viscose (at least 50 %). The engine of the textile revolution is the pioneering spirit of the young company, which consistently questions standard processes and researches new bionically inspired solutions in an interdisciplinary framework with research and science. The basis for the development of new fabrics is always the possibility of ecological and social production and the embedding in a system of circular economy.

EACH OTHER
1. each other …
Sebastian Klinder: … is our guiding theme this summer – a very clear one. And one that I think offers little room for interpretation about what we believe will become the key influencing factor on the trends of the coming season: namely, the importance of personal contact, of sharing and being there for each other, of listening carefully and looking closely.
Frank Junker: And there is a meta-level that resonates with and is very important to us: In these current times, it is about not being discouraged, but on the contrary, to take courage, to recognize one’s own scope of action and then to use it to create something beautiful with the form of expression that is inherent to us through our profession – fashion, aesthetics, quality – and thus to make a positive contribution to this world.

2. Mid of July …
Sebastian Klinder: … is currently, in our opinion, exactly the right date to bring the right people together at the right place and to set the right focal points and topics.
Frank Junker: The date is neither a matter of course nor due to any vanity, but the result of many discussions and considerations. And it is not a compromise – we are convinced that the majority of our visitors and exhibitors will benefit from the rescheduling.
3. Beginning of September …
Sebastian Klinder: … Munich is also a beautiful city. And of course we know that this order date will remain a relevant week in the order rhythm, regardless of the daily sequence of the MUNICH FABRIC START – that’s why the RE:VIEW will take place at this later date in the future.
Frank Junker: Then, by the way, also for the first time at Motorworld. We are sure that with the new early date for MFS and BLUEZONE, the RE:VIEW in September and the PRE:VIEW at the end of November, we have found an optimal solution for many needs.
4. 8 Areas…
Frank Junker: … are the result of a natural process. As a trade show platform, we strive to reflect the needs of our visitors and exhibitors – and clearly, a central place. Where everything that is needed to work purposefully comes together in a concentrated form and in a professional atmosphere. This is exactly what the market is looking for. Our now eight areas – FABRICS, ADDITIONALS, the BLUEZONE, the DESIGN STUDIOS, RE:SOURCE, THE SOURCE, the KEYHOUSE and the SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS – offer the essence of what fashion professionals need as points of inspiration and orientation to successfully work on their next collections.
Sebastian Klinder: Ultimately, we want to represent a cross-section of the relevant ecosystem of the fashion industry. We are less concerned with universality and sheer size than with real added value. Thus, our concept THE SOURCE, which will take place for the second time this summer in Hall 8, is the logical answer to the current process of progressive backward integration. And the consistently high frequency at KEYHOUSE over the years is proof that the entire industry is intensively addressing its medium- and long-term future prospects.
5. Speaking of … the future …
Sebastian Klinder: … seems even more difficult to predict today than I could have imagined in 2021. In this respect, the values that are particularly significant to us at MUNICH FABRIC START – continuity, reliability, humanity – are more important today than ever before.
Frank Junker: … to me is the unalterable conviction that physical events, perhaps especially in fashion, are and will be essential!
6. Buzzword bingo: Edutainment …
Frank Junker: … is far more than a buzzword, but cannot be taken seriously enough. The need for orientation and inspiration in this multipolar and over-complex present will even increase.
Sebastian Klinder: It is precisely because of this complexity that we focus on collaboration and cooperation: we want to work with the right experts and some of the best-connected people in the fashion world and trust their advice – whether it’s about our broad lecture program, our trend forums or our innovation areas.
Frank Junker: Because one thing is obvious: nowadays, no one can provide guidance on their own. To do justice to this mission, we need a really good team. And fortunately, we have one.
7. 20 years of BLUEZONE …
Frank Junker: … is our fulfillment of a vision. From the initial idea, to the actually impossible activation of a former industrial wasteland, BLUEZONE has become one of the most important denim platforms in Europe in a very short time. Thanks to a great continuity and in close proximity to MFS. Two completely different worlds, just a few steps away from each other.
Sebastian Klinder: Being able to celebrate 20 years of BLUEZONE is truly an emotional moment. It feels a bit like watching a child grow – of course you try to contribute your best, but it has to grow up on its own. We are very proud of our team, but in particular we want to thank all those who have always believed in BLUEZONE and made it the community platform for and from the denim world that it is today.
8. ConneXXion …
Frank Junker: Everything is interconnected. And this year, everything fits together perfectly. That’s why ConneXXion is the right guiding theme for the BLUEZONE anniversary. I truly believe that bringing the fun back into our beloved denim, fashion and textile world is key. And that’s why we all need to reconnect: reconnect with our personal goals and beliefs; reconnect with our companies and values; reconnect with what’s important and, last but not least, reconnect with each other.
Sebastian Klinder: So the guaranteed best opportunity to connect us all once again is, as always, our MUNICH FABRIC NIGHT – this summer on Tuesday, July 18, when we celebrate 20 years of BLUEZONE, the MFS in general and the entire industry. With this in mind: let’s bring the fun back into fashion together: Let’s get this party started!
