Knitcloud by N.I.O. – New Industrial Order: Knitwear Digitalisation

What’s behind the Knitcloud by N.I.O.?

It all started with The Girl and the Machine: an experimental brand around the idea of personalised knitwear. We were looking for an answer to today’s over-consumption that devalues garments and wears out our planet. 3D knitting is a way to produce clothes in one piece, without cutting, without seams and virtually without waste. Now The Girl has evolved into New Industrial Order (N.I.O.). We create digital designs that people can personalise, and produce only when a customer orders it. This way, the customer’s measurements, personal style and fit preferences are incorporated in the production process. It is the ultimate way of making clothes.

What is your vision and mission along the way to disrupt the fashion industry?

The word sustainability in every high-street brands collection does not stop the constant overproduction and too many clothes in our own closets. It is great that there are now lots of people who try to inspire other people to think and change their behaviour. However, being human ourselves, we know how hard it is to change one’s habits. That is why we focus on making the most sustainable, the absolute best and the most fun option imaginable. In the future, we empower people to create their own unique clothes. You decide what is made. Designers and brands will discover a whole new playing field and present amazing, mostly digital garments to communicate their vision. Digitalisation will ultimately make it possible to sell without big investments. Clever networks such as Knitcloud will be key in realizing a liveable balance on earth.

What can our visitors expect from your presentation at Keyhouse?

Knitcloud introduces the industry to the world of Knitting on demand. Creating a global network of knitting machines accessible for everyone. Knitcloud supports brands, designers and webshops by connecting virtual design, body measurement apps and virtual fitting solutions. And the most important we offer a Digital Tailoring System (DTS) and an On-demand Order System (ONOS). Therefore, Knitcloud will be the first open ecosystem for personalised 3D knitwear on demand in the world. At KEYHOUSE, visitors can experience how Knitcloud can be used from the consumers end.

What is more to tell about the product?

During our first experiments, we have made 200 bespoke pieces sold to 200 customers. The experiment was successful what confirmed our vision and made our belief stronger: 3D knitwear on demand is the future.

‘Making this possible on a large scale is a challenge. We are doing this not because it easy, but because it is hard and we are willing to accept this challenge.’

3D-knitwear on-demand requires a radical shift in the supply chain. This is difficult in the current fashion industry, where business models and processes are still focused on mass production. We will also present a showcase of our own new 3D-printed knitwear brand under the name of N.I.O.. Knitted to your size in our standard luxury 100% total-easy-care and extrafine Merino Wool from Baruffa. A jumper that ticks all the boxes of what makes everybody happy: it makes you look great, it is light to wear, soft to the skin, easy to care for. It also stands the test of time and is 100% reusable.

You’re invited to attend MUNICH FABRIC START, where more than 1000 suppliers will present more than 1800 collections for Fabrics and Additionals for Autumn.Winter 20/21.

Soorty: Innovative and Sustainable

Soorty, as a pioneer in technological advances, resource-saving processes as well as state of the art production methods and denim innovations, presents a range of new technological developments for the new Autumn.Winter 20/21 season. The Pakistani denim manufacturer has already received the HighTex Award, the innovation prize at MUNICH FABRIC START, for their overall strategic, responsible and sustainable corporate policy.

One of the key topics at Soorty is FIX-D, one of the world’s first waterless textile dyeing technologies. FIX-D was developed at the NASDA Innovation Lab and expanded with Soorty Denim Mill & Soorty Garment Factories. FIX-D ensures a sustainable and environmentally friendly finishing process due to extremely fast dyeing solutions.
In addition, Soorty offers a range of timeless classics with authentic laser-based vintage washes.
Also in a vintage look are rustic denim types as ‘Neo Pioneers‘ with classic twill weave in various winter white colours, from clear white to elegant ecru.

In a new collaboration with Lola Poelio, the denim specialist launch the collection Lola x Roxy for Soorty, with a new approach to the recycling of textile remnants. Playful, colourful and in a young look. The capsule collection is made only from resourced materials, wastage fabrics and rejected samples as well as other resourced materials.

The focus for Autumn.Winter 20/21 is also on recycling. As the owner of a state-of-the-art recycling facility, Soorty increasingly also uses leftover industrial waste within its product range. The recycled denim fabrics from Soorty have different blending ratios that can range from 5% to 25%, and in individual cases far more. This results in fabrics with various material combinations, weight classes and elasticity levels that meet the target groups’ specific demands in terms of look and feel of the new collection.

Autumn.Winter 20/21: The Meaning Behind the Key Visual

The release of our new key visual marks the start of a new season here at Munich Fabric Start. Over the last few months our team has uniquely interpreted and defined the trends and theme for the upcoming Autumn.Winter 20/21 season. Read more about how trends are made at Munich Fabric Start.

BEYOND AWARE presents a season which is free to explore the ways our world and fashion are changing, proving they are on a new path where everything is connected. Describing a season which is ready to embrace and be part of a new world exploring and developing the relationship between fashion and our planet, through awareness of the beyond.

The designer Julia Boll, at Stein Communication with over 10 years of experience as a graphic designer, has beautifully translated the theme of the new season BEYOND AWARE. Here she tells us more about her thought process and inspirations for this new project.

As a designer, I like to be inspired by as many things as possible. Of course, it always depends on what the specific task requires. Sometimes I am inspired by colors, shapes, newfound objects or it can also be photos and illustrations. I am someone who enjoys spending their free time drawing, mostly of funny characters, which I also then screenprint.

The final design actually came together from two very different designs. I liked the idea of incorporating soap bubbles because it is just not so “spiritual” but fragile. And yet it still transported the topic pretty well. Soap bubbles are cheerful and light and fly very calmly but always with the wind. In addition, they can quickly burst irretrievably, you cannot grab them and although they appear clear they still display many beautiful colors. A bit like thoughts or feelings, but also like fashion. The background of the key visual had been part of another graphic. It works well because it reflects a lot of power while also reflecting an expression of the fast-moving, digitalization as well as the idea that a lot of things are happening and developing in different directions. Many energies are released and you still do not know where to go. Let you guide yourself, beyond aware!

We are looking forward to a great new season!

SOURCING –New Area at MUNICH FABRIC START

A new SOURCING area will be presented as part of the MUNICH FABRIC START trade show from 3 – 5 September 2019. The SOURCING area will be hosted in the newly integrated section of the fair in Hall 8 directly opposite the MOC venue. Here, the formerly designated APPAREL SOURCING area will be relaunched as SOURCING. This pooling of a both condensed and yet extensive portfolio is a decisive step for the strategic focus of the trade fair at destination Munich.

With SOURCING, MUNICH FABRIC START offers a platform dedicated to international manufacturing and sourcing solutions to meet the demand of buyers in the fashion sectors who are looking for full package, private label and bespoke sourcing solutions. The first MANUFACTURING edition will host a selection about approximately 70 international apparel manufacturers that meet our strict requirements regarding quality, production capacity, professional references, as well as their CSR strategy.

The idea underpinning this new format is to create both an inviting and effective setting for realizing unique communication as well as a working environment in a zeitgeist-inspiring, high-end environment.
Sebastian Klinder, Managing Director MUNICH FABRIC START

SOURCING in Hall 8 offers professional networking in a unique setting. Staged in a former industrial site for railway maintenance, this site has recently undergone extensive restoration work while maintaining the original industrial Bauhaus architecture dating from 1926. This unique venue offers the perfect setting for brands, retailers and intermediaries to meet and exchange. These are ideal prerequisites for MUNICH FABRIC START. The aim of SOURCING is to create a business platform with an enhanced atmosphere for future oriented networking.

Previous apparel sourcing editions at MUNICH FABRIC START presented manufacturers from Portugal, Germany, Lithuania, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Tunisia, and Egypt. Effectively demonstrating the focus of the exhibition, namely to present apparel manufactures neighbouring the European market, ensuring swift delivery times, flexible volumes and free market access.

The following product categories will be presented in the upcoming SOURCING edition: Accessories, Corporate, Couture, Lingerie, Leisurewear, Outdoor, Sportswear, Tailored, and Ready to Wear for Womenswear, Menswear and Kidswear.

MUNICH FABRIC START Spring.Summer 2020 Highlights

Discover our Spring Summer 2020 Highlights Video

The latest MUNICH FABRIC START from 29th – 31st January 2019 focused intently on sustainability, new product and process solutions, strong collection statements and convincing concepts. Continuing to prove the benefits of direct exchanges and the importance intensive networking has for both visitors and exhibitors, and how amidst the changing industry landscape these connections are more valuable than ever.

MUNICH FABRIC START offers information and inspiration for the fashion and textile industry while also delivering solutions to the following prevalent questions: Which textile innovations can be incorporated into the modern collections? What role does technology and digitization play in production processes? And how strongly can the progressive topic of sustainability influence the textile business as a value driver?

Planet REhab Capsule: Celebrating Sustainable Collaboration

It is great to have organic fibres, right? But as a producer of fibres, the influence on a more sustainable textile production often stops here. Textile garments have complex supply chains which sometimes imply production partners all over the world. That’s why the solution for a more coherent and holistic form of sustainability often lies in right supply chain partnerships!

That’s the idea behind the so called “Planet Rehab” capsule collection, for which renowned textile companies, who are environmentally committed, have partnered up to create something bigger than their own.

The collection was presented during last edition of KEYHOUSE in January. MUNICH FABRIC START feels especially committed about this project as all project partners – Lenzing, Tejidos Royo, Officina +39, and Tonello have been long term exhibitors at the fair.

These companies recognized the success to achieving their own goals lies in fulfilling their shared ones, by working collaboratively and responsibly – seeking out more sustainable raw materials, implementing new technologies and employing processes that reduce resource utilization and waste. Juan Carlos Gordillo designed the Rehab collection around Lenzing’s TENCEL™ and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ branded lyocell fabrics from Tejidos Royo. The fabrics were dyed using Recycrom technology from Officina+39 and the resultant garments finished by Tonello.

Lenzing’s TENCEL™ and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ branded lyocell fibers enhance the sustainable qualities of the fabrics. Made from renewable wood in a closed loop, energy and resource efficient manufacturing process, TENCEL™ fibers and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ fibers made with recycled cotton scraps provide the fabrics with softness, smoothness, tenacity, and color intensity.

Spanish fabric producer, Tejidos Royo, creates “fabric with values” through the company’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The manufacturer’s vertical business model has substantially reduced its energy consumption and CO2 emissions through aggressive R&D and provides complete transparency and traceability for their customers

Officina+39’s Recycrom dyes are made from recycled clothing and textile scraps that are specially processed by these Italian experts through a sophisticated production process using only natural chemicals. Waste fabrics are crystalized into an incredibly fine powder that can be used as a pigment dye. Recycrom received the Hightex Award at MUNICH FABRIC START for Autumn/Winter 17/18.

Laundry specialist Tonello also based in Italy, contributed their ECOFREE 2 technology to the project. Fulfilling the needs of the designers and their customers, Tonello’s revolutionary washing process significantly reduces the water and hazardous chemical consumption typically associated with denim finishing.

Guatemalan designer, Juan Carlos Gordillo, applauds the Planet REhab objectives and used the member companies’ products to create fifteen women’s outfits that celebrate life and nature with exceptional color flair and a decidedly Latin influence. The full collection was displayed during the last edition of KEYHOUSE in January 2019, showcasing the eclectic and artistic style for which Gordillo is known for.

“Planet REhab is my tribute to the ocean with its deep colors and flowing shapes,” the celebrated designer says. “The collection also protects the ocean because it is created from the sustainable fibers, fabrics, dyes, and finishing techniques perfected by the Planet REhab collaborating companies. While many companies talk about being sustainable, these companies had the courage to actually create sustainable products and processes that benefit the industry, society, and the planet. I hope this collection can inspire other designers to prioritize sustainability in their creative processes.”
